CA-50: 31 days left to turn this c.d. blue

Sat Mar 11, 2006 at 06:58:02 PM PDT

With only 31 days to go until this special election in California's 50th congressional district, Francine Busby has a good chance to turn this c.d. blue. In this special election being held April 11th are a slew of GOP candidates most of whom seem to be trying to "out-wingnut" each other in the eyes of the voters. One the Democratic side, Busby is the one candidate with the name recognition and fundraising who can win this race.

CA-50: A winnable race - 32 days to special election

Fri Mar 10, 2006 at 08:32:42 AM PDT

The race for the special election in CA-50 is coming down to the wire. The field is crowded with Republicans, many of who appear to be real wingnuts in search of power. This is a seat formerly held by Republican Culture of Corruption poster boy Randy "Duke" Cunningham. In the midst of all these Republicans running for this seat, there is a well financed Democratic candidate with excellent name recognition that really stands out. Francine Busby is the only Democratic candidate in the race with the name recognition and the fundraising that can actually win this race and turn this c.d. blue.

CA-50: A house seat we CAN turn blue, only 34 days left

Wed Mar 08, 2006 at 07:39:48 PM PDT

Well, we did all we could for Ciro. The netroots responded and despite coming up short, we played a big role. I hope now we can shift that same focus and intensity to a winnable House race. A race for a seat that we can turn from red to blue. CA-50 has been in the news most recently because the former holder of that seat, convicted Republican felon Randy "Duke" Cunningham, betrayed the trust of his constituents and accepted massive bribes from a defense contractor. Well the "Duke-stir" is gonna be "vacationing" for the next eight years or so and there is going to be a special election held on April 11 to fill this seat.

In this Republican leaning district there are a large number of Republicans fighting it out for the wingnut vote. There is however, just one well-funded Democratic candidate who according to Superribbie has greater name recognition than any of her GOP opponents. That candidate is Francine Busby.

AZ-08: Why I just contributed to Jeff Latas

Mon Mar 06, 2006 at 09:54:04 AM PDT

It's not because he's a "Fighting Dem". It's because of his positions on many of the issues that are important to me. I didn't know much about Latas until the past couple of months. It was his diary entries that really piqued my interest and got me to take a look at his website.

Diary entries like these:
My hero is coming home
Update: My hero
Marking time at Walter Reed
The Wine of the Whore of Babylon, Our Middle Eastern Oil Dependance Options
Breeding misery, Breeding hope
Growing up union
New Orleans Animals Starving Again

Jeff Latas doesn't come here and just post about his campaign and solicit donations. His diaries show his human side: a father who looks at his son as a hero, a son of a longtime union member who understands the struggle of the working class, and an animal lover whose acts on his compassion for neglected and unwanted animals.

Wal-Mart in violation of Michigan pricing laws

Wed Mar 01, 2006 at 03:09:25 PM PDT

Wal-Mart is having trouble complying with the law in Michigan. The state Attorney General's office is starting legal action against Wal-Mart by filing a notice of intended action.
AP Article
An investigation by the state attorney general's office at five Wal-Mart stores found up to 80 percent of the merchandise didn't carry price tags, Attorney General Mike Cox said Wednesday

In four of the stores' grocery sections, only 1 percent to 10 percent of items had price tags, Cox said.

"To just so arrogantly ignore the law is surprising," he noted at a news conference. "You are clearly putting consumers at a clear disadvantage."

Sorry Paul Hackett, I can't support IAVA PAC

Tue Feb 28, 2006 at 05:25:03 PM PDT

As a contributor to Paul Hackett's congressional and senatorial campaigns I was reading his diary "Continuing the fight..." with some interest.  Now among many here, Hackett's name is golden and as a result his diary made it to the reco list with many comments singing his praises and complimenting him. After following the link to IAVA PAC, I have to think that many of those pledging support really don't understand that this PAC will also support Republican candidates for office.

NY-19: John Hall announces fundraising events

Wed Feb 22, 2006 at 08:31:11 PM PDT

John Hall, one of five Democratic candidates vying to challenge incumbent Republican Rep. Sue Kelly, has announced some fundraising events for March. Hall, a musician and member of the band Orleans, is using his musical contacts to drum (pardon the pun) up financial support. He has performances and receptions lined up including appearances and performances by: Hall himself, John Sebastian of The Lovin Spoonful, Jimmy Vivino of Max Weinberg's 7 of the Conan O'Brien Show and Jon Pousette-Dart. ALso taking part in the fundraising are politicians Maurice Hinchey and former FBI special agent and whistleblower Coleen Rowley who is running for congress in Minnesota. More info about these fundraisers.

John appears to be a terrific progressive candidate who has experience as an Ulster County legislator from the Town of Saugerties.

NY-19: Bush/Delay lackey Sue Kelly (R) ripe for the picking.

Sat Feb 18, 2006 at 07:42:55 AM PDT

The 19th congressional district of New York is currently under-represented by Republican Sue Kelly who came into office in the 1994 Republican "Contract with America" tide.  Kelly is a good example of a Bush sycophant and a Delay lackey who recently supported the ethically challenged Delay protege Roy Blount to fill Delay's GOP leadership role in the House. Kelly also recently voted to pass the Republican legislation that slashed $39 billion from some very vital programs in the federal budget. These cuts included $6.4 billion in Medicare spending for the elderly and also jacks up interest rates in student loans by up to 40%.

It's time to dump Sue Kelly and replace her with a Democrat who will better represent the voters of NY-19.

CA-50: Only 53 days left until special election - Elect Francine Busby

Fri Feb 17, 2006 at 11:51:16 AM PDT

In the 50th Congressional District of California, the race is on to fill the seat of disgraced GOP Congressman and felon Randy "Duke" Cunningham. Cunningham, a perfect candidate for the Republican Culture of Corruption Hall of Fame, is now preparing for his sentencing hearing on Feb. 27th. Meanwhile, Democratic candidate Francine Busby continues to be a strong candidate to win the seat in CA-50. On April 11, a special election will be held and judging by many accounts Busby is doing very well.

As far as what I know about the special election, if Busby wins more than 50% of the votes in the special election she will not have to face a runoff election and she will win the seat. With a crowded field that may be a longshot but there is only one other Democratic candidate who, it appears, has little funding and name recognition.

Union Organizing: a battle being waged in North Carolina

Mon Feb 13, 2006 at 06:56:00 PM PDT

The fight to organize the largest pork processing plant in the U.S. is a perfect example of the lengths that corporate America will go to prevent union organizing efforts. The United Food and Commercial Workers Union has long been trying to organize the Smithfield Foods plant in Tar Heel, NC but has been fought tooth and nail by a company that the NLRB has ruled used intimidation, firing, bullying and physical violence to frighten employees into rejecting previous votes to organize the plant.

New York Times article

In 1997, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union lost a unionization election at the sprawling plant, built in this rural town 75 miles south of Raleigh. But it was not until 2004 that the National Labor Relations Board upheld an administrative law judge's decision that threw out the election results.

The labor board found that the Smithfield Packing Company not only had prevented a fair election by illegally intimidating, firing, threatening and spying on workers but also had a union supporter beaten up the night of the vote count.

It's 10am, have you called your Senator yet?

Mon Jan 30, 2006 at 07:19:51 AM PDT

It's 10am here on the east coast, have you called your senators yet? We flooded their phones on Friday and jammed their fax machines and voicemail systems over the weekend but let's not let up. If you haven't done it yet, then get to it. If you've called and faxed already, then spend a few more minutes and do it again. Contact numbers are below. Take a few minutes of your time to help preserve the constitution and our civil rights. Get on the horn, call and fax these senators and let them know what you think of Sam Alito and that you expect them to support a filibuster of his nomination to the Supreme Court. They don't have to vote no on cloture if they are that uncomfortable with it, they can just abstain.

CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll: Bush's 2nd term a failure

Fri Jan 27, 2006 at 07:12:51 AM PDT

A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll taken last weekend shows that 58% of 1006 people polled consider his second term a failure.

Also of note:

Fewer people consider Bush to be honest and trustworthy now than did a year ago, and 53 percent said they believe his administration deliberately misled the public about Iraq's purported weapons program before the U.S. invasion in 2003

So you wanna know who your neighbors are? Neat tool

Sat Jan 14, 2006 at 12:52:52 PM PDT

Would you like to know who your neighbors contributed to in the 2004 Presidential election? DNC, RNC, John Kerry, George Dubya, Wesley Clark, etc.? I came across a neat website, Fundrace that combines FEC contribution filings data with mapping technology which allows you to search a neighborhood to find out who has contributed to who. Please note that it only contains records from Jan 1, 2003 through Oct 13, 2004 and I'm not sure if the site owner abandoned the project after the election, or if they just weren't receiving enough contributions to maintain it (it is run by a 501(c)3 non profit. So far it only seems limited to contributions to presidential candidates and the major political parties (DNC & RNC).

CA-48, Steve Young... who cares? (w. poll)

Tue Nov 29, 2005 at 07:49:01 PM PDT

We're one week from a special election in CA-48 and there seems to be next to zero interest in it. Steve Young is running as the Democratic candidate and he appears to be getting little support, except from those in his district. With all of the Duke Cunningham news there's been much more mention here of Francine Busby who seems to be the popular choice for the now vacant seat in CA-50. As that special election will be held in the very near future, that's understandable. However, I'm trying to figure out the lack of support for Young. Has his candidacy been written off as not having a shot? With the exception of a diary written today by Sorceress Sarah and a few others such as BigDog04 in the past few weeks, there's been little attention paid to this election.

Does Hackett have a chance against Brown? w. poll

Tue Oct 25, 2005 at 04:16:54 PM PDT

Before the flames begin, those are the words of kos straight from a diary comment. So you don't have to scroll all the way down through 370 comments, here's the comment:

You are right (4.00 / 2)

There is no contradiction.

Personal preferences versus pragmatism. If I had a choice, I'd choose Hackett. Heck, I'm having him on my Fighting Dems segment on Air America this Tuesday.

But really, Hackett has no chance against Brown. Another run at OH-02, forcing the GOP to spend money defending what should be a safe seat, could pay double dividends -- giving us a chance to take the seat and stretching the GOP in the House picture even thinner.

But alas, the Hackett Fedayeen have to rely on lame "flip flop" accusations to try and score points. And the worst of it is they think this is helping their candidate.

Geothermal heating for your home

Fri Sep 16, 2005 at 04:31:32 PM PDT

Had a builder client of mine ask me what I thought the demand would be for new homes built using geothermal heating to provide the heating/cooling for the home. I had learned a little bit about these systems a while back, but completely forgot all about it. Not being an expert, but having some knowledge, I told him that it would be an excellent selling point and highly recommended it.

Having had an opportunity to do a little research today, I can't see why most homes built today aren't relying on this renewable resource for heating and cooling.

Coleen Rowley for Congress MN-02: Ethics, Ethics, Ethics

Wed Aug 03, 2005 at 08:51:53 AM PDT

"Coleen Rowley will work to change Congress for Minnesota, the United States and the World"

The "perfect storm" is brewing which may allow Democrats to take back Congress. Americans from all walks of life are growing tired of the ethically challenged and morally bankrupt 'leadership' of the Republicans in the White House, Congress and many state legislatures. By running the best the Democratic Party has to offer and hammering home the ethical and criminal violations committed by Republicans such as Tom Delay, Randy "Duke" Cunningham, Karl Rove, Coingate, etc. we're primed to end the Republican stranglehold on the political process.

Meanwhile, back in Niger...

Sun Jul 24, 2005 at 06:30:32 PM PDT

Yet another crisis of increasingly epic proportions is happening with scant attention from much of the world. Apparently, the Bush Administration focused plenty on Niger when they saw forged documents as a way to justify their invasion if Iraq. Now, when millions in Niger face starvation, where is their attention?

The aid agency Oxfam warned last week that about 3.6 million people, about a third of them children, face starvation in this West African nation devastated by locusts and drought. The U.N.'s humanitarian agency estimates some 800,000 children under 5 are suffering from hunger, including 150,000 faced with severe malnutrition.

Here's the story More below.
